We’ve all heard of people putting Subaru engines in VWs and trikes and such, but I’ve always wondered how it works. The entire drive train is flipped around backwards. So how does it move forward? You’re not driving in the reverse gear the whole time. Do you have to rebuild the transmission? Or just use the VW transmission? Or is there some kind of reversal gearing? My brain is incapable. I got 3 hours of sleep last night, too, so I have no shame.
(Forgive the crappy video. It won’t let me post pics.)

I too have wondered this, but not enough to actually ask the google. I suspect its just a right hand vs left had transmission.

Reverse cut ring and pinion gears.

They don’t make gears for the STI 6sp, that’s crazy sauce, those are the ones you’d want.
At the point you’re spending all the money to do this swap, why wouldn’t you pay a little more for the better trans?

You use the front drive shaft and cap off the rear, remember Subaru transmission have to out puts because the center diff is in the transmission. They dont change the rotation of the motor.
PS Andy good to see you again....It’s Bob from MixedBin (BetweenGears)

A reverse cut or high pinion gear is just a gear set with a pinion above the center line of the carrier they don’t run in revers.

I’m just telling you what most people call Reverse Cut gears in the 4x4 world (i obviously didn’t’ click or read the link before you told me to).....but yes those gears are for revers rotation, and would be needed if you were trying to use a non Subaru awd transmission. Most dune buggies and other custom builds just use the front out put shaft of a awd transmission. But if you had to mate it to a factory porches or bug transmission they these gears would work i guess.
